i have gone to the cursed abbey and given that dude the gold, is that wat i was supposed to do or have i done it wrong..

That was the honourable thing to do. Had you refused he would have turned hostile and a few more enemies would appear. You get the same reputation bonus either way; refusing to pay results in a tough fight, though gives more experience points.

does that relive the curse from the abbey though?

Yes.

But the engineer is a tough one, and he summons a lot of help(ers) - watch out for your level, when trying the next time.
