I'm a little stumped. Can you actually create your own game/adventure/quest or just use the GM features? It seems like the GM features are so slow and clunky and you'd have to be intimately familiar with every feature and aspect in order to facilitate even a tolerable experience for the players - that is, you'd have to be really good and have the whole adventure really well thought-out to even think about inviting other players.

Then I learned about the editor. This seems ridiculously complex, but it looks like you could actually create your own game using the DOS2 assets. Is this accurate? I'm interested in a sort of RPG Maker-sort of freedom but with the DOS assets. In other words, I create the experience from start to finish - the lore (including books that can be found), the characters, and even record my own voice-overs. If this is the case, i would like to be able to allow custom player characters or allow imported/created ones.

Am I expecting too much or is this exactly what was intended with the editor? Or is the editor just intended to create "levels" that others can use in GM mode. I guess I'm a little confused as to the intent of the awesomely powerful editor as it relates to creation of original content versus facilitation of GM content.

TLDR: Can you make a game from scratch or just create user content for GM mode?

The editor allows you to create your own custom, complete campaign with levels, dialogs, quests, etc. It's (mostly) the same tool they used to create the DOS2 campaign but it does have some limitations. For instance, we are not able to add new sounds to the game so your wish to have custom voice overs is not feasible. It is essentially a professional development tool, so it is considered complex by many who pick it up, as you alluded to.

Thanks for your reply; is this definitive, that there's no way to add sounds? Or do you just mean there's no way to record it within the app itself? Either way, it's not too big of a deal. It just would have been cool, but probably more work that it's worth - who wants an entire game narrated by one guy (unless you're Bastion)? lol

Anyway, yeah, I've been watching lots of YouTube videos of creation. I'm still stumped, but I'm learning. Thanks!

There is no way to take a sound file in any format and turn it into an asset that the game can utilize. You can read a bit more about the question and answer from Larian in this thread.

Be sure to check out some of the tutorials on the Larian wiki and I highly encourage people to join the discord server and check out the modding channels there. There are some good stickies for getting started and a lot of information sharing on a daily basis.
