You need to go to the bottom of the screen or southern part of the room. You can go into a narrow passageway, and the device to turn off the poison, a lever I recall, is there. Also, the poison doesn't reach that area, so your slow death is abated.

keep tight to wall on the left as you enter room, half way across switch on other side of wall, can't see entance keep tight to wall you will find it.
