I am on try 6 by now, from the other 5, 4 ended like this:

No matter how I prepared for the second phase, the second braccus breaks free, the game just clusters my team together, the kraken blasts us with the AoE, summons a boss that gets a free turn, every other enemy gets a free turn, and normals I end up with one guy surviving this plain unfair phase start...

Then actually was lucky enough that I had 2 survivors, tried to get some distance to regroup, Dallis turns into a FREAKING DRAGON and smokes my last 2 dudes...

What is this? The Gear check stage, where it says "it doesnt matter how you play or if you had any problems to now, go load an old save, grind more levels and gear and come back later because screw tactics?"

Is there some vendor before I enter the cathedral that sells the god like gear I need to survive until I actually get a turn in phase 2?

I have to say, its a real shame that such an awesome game has to end on such a cheese and just plain unfair fight... and I thought the death room before would be the only negative experience I took away from this masterpiece of a game...

Yeah your party will get blasted by a couple of AoE's at the beginning of phase 2 and there's not much you can do about that aside from surviving it. Do your best to keep your party in top shape, buff them up and whatnot, just before going into phase 2. This should be able to help you survive the beginning of phase 2. If it doesn't, it probably means you're not beefy enough. Try to be at least level 20 and upgrade your gear to about the same level. The idea is to get through phase 1 only taking minimal damage - or none at all. Also helps if everyone in your party has a teleport-type ability ready when phase 2 begins so they can get out of the frying pan easily.

A really neat tactic albeit a bit cheesy to me is spamming Charm using Dominate Mind, Charming Arrows, Love Grenades. It won't stop the Kraken from throwing AoE's at your team when phase 2 begins though.

Even Phase one is pure BS.

I cant even position my team, because the game just pulls them all together so they can be bend over and get one AoE after another shoved into their behinds.

Battle already starts with that damn Lucian jumping in my team and zapping them, which leaves 2 of the already shocked, so I already start with 3 AP, while the enemys all seem to start with 6. And hey, then I cant even move out, because EVERY SINGEL ONE OF MY TEAM is in reaction shot range of Lucian.

Sure, you can get through this, but in phase 2, even when I have all at full health, 2 are just instakilled from that acid AoE Attack followed by bossmonster beatdown...

I have no idea who balanced this...

Yep, now if someone ever says "Wits trumps all", you know why. The tougher a fight is, the more important it is that you go first. Usually when both sides are really strong, it boils down to who lands the first hit. Just like how in HOMM3 Speed becomes more and more essential the later in the game you are.

But anyway, sometimes a slight change in your party state might result in totally different responses from enemies. So let's say you get to go first and you aggro Lucian, it's possible that he won't go for the others of your teams. If you can go first you can even disable Lucian and deny his turn if your character has good damage output. The easiest way to slow him down is probably by teleporting him somewhere far away. A slight difference in elevation can result in a big increase in spell range, so you can actually teleport him quite far back.

At least that's what I did the first time I did this fight. Teleporting Lucian away made him waste one turn. After that with Lohse's Inner Demon Terrify + Savage Sortilege it wasn't hard to get rid of his magic armor and then I just charmed him, or whatever. I don't know what members you have and their builds, so can't really give any more specific hints.
