I'm only a few hours into the game so I'm still learning a lot of the various mechanics so please bear with me if I'm missing something obvious. I was wondering whether my part needs to have specific tasks and objects allocated to certain characters to give myself the best chance of for example picking locks etc. Do I need my lockpicks in the inventory of my best lockpicker? And do I need to make sure that character is the one selected when making the attempt? Or does the game use the character with the best relevant skills automatically?

When making the attempt to pick locks, you *do* need to select the right character. But the lockpicks can be on anyone. Same for identifying stuff, digging, or opening doors using keys - the Identifying Glass, shovel, and keys can be on anyone. The game automatically uses the relevant item from whoever is having it. In the case of identifying items and examining NPC's, the game does select the best member for the task; you don't have to.

One thing is not shared is persuasion though. So the character that you're leveling it up, make sure is always leading the party and you're using to talk to people with.

Ofc sometimes it can't be helped cuz enemies/allies will talk right after a fight or w/e and they'll talk to anyone whos close, who might not be the talker....which imo is stupid but w/e. Something to keep in mind.
