Very frustrating! I ran this game just fine in the past. I recently updated windows 10 and my drivers.

I am having the same issue. So far I have tried the following:

Update Windows 10
Update Nvidia drivers
Check the following boxes in the Compatibility tab of EoCApp.exe in the steamapps DefEd bin folder: "Disable fullscreen optimizations" and "Run this program as an administrator"
Verify integrity of files in Steam

But I still get crashing in game:

Error: DXG1_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
Reason: DXG1_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG

It may be that my graphics card is no longer up to snuff (GTX 680). I have had no problem with the classic version of DOS2.

This error message means the graphic driver has crashed. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that in your case it's probably an overheating problem.

While the OP didn't mention if he got any sort of error messages, but he did report that this game "melted" his laptop. This actually lends more validity to my guess.

I myself have had crashes accompanied by this error message. But in my case it has always happened only when I alt-tabbed out of the game. The game would crash when I tried to get back in. I have noticed signs of overheating for some time while playing other games, as well. This is why I'm replacing the fans of my laptop in the next couple days.

I have not had this problem in any other games, including the following I have recently been playing:

Path of Exile
Project:Gorgon
Civ 6 Rise and Fall
Witcher 3 DLC
Elder Scrolls Online

Some of these are quite graphics intensive (like PoE with all of the spell particle effects).

I don't think the games you listed are very intensive on GPU. The Witcher 3 might be demanding on high settings, but it actually does not cause much heat, in my experience. I used to play Dark Souls 3 and Witcher 3 around the same time. My GPU temp never went above 80 even after playing TW3 for half a day, while DS3 always pushed it to ~90.

It's hard to tell, since not every game just crashes when the graphic card starts to throttle. When I play TW3 or some other newer games my FPS would go down after a bit because of the throttling, but they never crash. In the past, forcing the GPU fan to run at max speed helped me deal with this problem.

Anyway, the best way to verify this is to get an utility that lets you check the temperature of your CPU and GPU. Check your temps after playing this game and maybe some other games for half an hour or so. If they are too high, you might indeed be dealing with an overheating problem.

You're probably right. I found a guide that tells what to try if you get that error. I tried turning off anti-aliasing and disabling Shadowplay (by deleting Shadowplay on Start up in the registry), but neither of those worked. Next thing to try is cleaning the fans, which are probably pretty dusty.

Or I can wait a couple weeks until my new computer arrives, which will have an RTX 2080. I'm way past due - my current comp is about 6-7 years old (whenever GTX 680 was top of the line).

I tried blowing dust off the case and GPU fans. Then I installed MSI Afterburner. I still keep crashing within a min or 2 after loading the save game on the tutorial deck, just prior to pulling the lever to help the prisoner. After crashing my GPU temp is < 60C.
