Perhaps colour coding, or something, to differentiate between new skills, skills you alread have which can be upgraded, and skills you have at or better than the teacher's level.
It's not that hard to exit the conversation and check if you have something, but if you don't remember the level and don't have the spare skill points to check, you could either be wasting gold or missing skill levels.
