So everytime I play a new game, the pet pal option disappears at some point while playing... just completely randomly. I'll get to a point where talking to an animal is crucial (for some benign reason) and I not longer have Pet Pal.... Which just confuses me. Is there any enemy that removes that talent?

If I recall correctly you can lose Pet Pal if you choose to learn how to channel Source from Hannag in Act II. This can be avoided by choosing another mentor or simply talking to her with another character in your party that doesn't have Pet Pal.
