There is some strange writing in the game. Sometimes it on the wall but mostly its in manuscripts. I saw one book that changed some of the writing to regular letters. I haven't seen any other books that will unlock the reading skill. I'm still in act 1.
You can read it if you examine the letters long enough, I've read two of the translation books, and I really dont need any more to understand most of it, so even if you miss one along the way its not much of a big deal.
