Well, finally is true, Baldur’s Gate 3 will happens and everybody is celebrating, now, shall we take a time to think few things?
Maybe all the developers know well what I will say, and then they do things different due distributor's requests for marketing, sales, or maybe because the difficulty to do things right, but I feel the need to say it because here are too many things which can go wrong.
Genre
A game is, essentially, its genre. In this case, Baldur’s Gate also was the founder of the real time isometric combat with tactical pause, with a plethora of games in that style. Would they change to TB, or worse, 1st/3rd person action?
I’m afraid about the presentation for Stadia (which has a controller), can conspire against real time/tactical pause, system which have been proven unplayable on the console versions of Dragon Age Origins (for that reason they’ve converted the saga in ARPG with the disgraceful results we all know), or recently in Pillars of Eternity (fortunately PoE2 still in its genre). Now, since Stadia also can be played with KB+Mouse, would Larian have the courage to continue with the original genre?
Plot
The plot is the next in importance (yes, genre is the most important, because is what you will be doing all the time). In this case, Baldur’s Gate ended in Throne of Bahal, would they make unnecessary sequels, which are so usual these days destroying classic franchises in movies and video games?
Humor
Everyone loves funny moments but apparently Larian has no limit here, if they continue with things such as... manage stealth with walking bushes..., wouldn't they end up converting BG3 in a parody of himself?
Saga
When a game/movie, only has in common the background (the universe), but anything else, a consecutive number feels always bad. I love Fallout 3 (one of my favorite games), but would love it even more without that “3”, breaking the original saga.
And Fallout 3 was the good example, also we have the worst of this practice in Dragon Age 2, Diablo 3, Sacred 3, Dungeon Siege 3, and many, many more (also fear the ‘3’ in the majority of them...), being commercial products to sell to the masses...
Modding
I don’t feel comfortable with probably the most beloved RPG franchise presented in first place for a streaming platform. I started in modding with Baldu’rs Gate, a simple thing as change my portrait had tremendous impact in my fun, and encouraged me to continue with my own sounds and text lines, to end up modding with the Infinity Engine making my custom adventures. BG3 won’t be a Baldur’s Gate game without modding.
What we, the players, are thinking (even if many never say it)
We probably would love another Larian RPG, but would love it even more if they don’t ruin our childhood.
Larian should clarify many things ASAP.
