Because I love role play and was really intensively thinking about the races, about their traits and stuff, that you think about usually, in times when you're bored the most, I came up with this. There are 7 races in Rivellon, but in D:OS2, you can't play the Orcs and the Imps, so excluding them, we're left with 5. Also Mages can be of any race that is there, that makes 4 then. These four are playable and here's the idea. The reason for those races to either have or not have the Pet Pal innate talent. That is when you start the game and proceed through the tutorial, you'll either have Pet Pal, or not and you can of course get it later, after you level up in Fort Joy. Think of it as some kind of background, I guess.
I'll start with the Lizards. They are the descendants of Dragons, powerful creatures with strong magic, I would definitely see them to understand the language of animals.
Including the Red Prince, he is after all a lizard. And following his quest, he can become a father to a new breed of dragons, who may, or may not talk later. Would be definitely viable.
Going on with the Elves. Including Sebille of course, and eventhough Ifan isn't exactly an Elf, he was raised by them, it doesn't really matter here, because I wouldn't give them Pet Pal as an innate talent, they could pick it up later, but not start with it. The reason is, they are close to the nature, yes, but more to the flora, than fauna. They talk to trees, because they are their ancestors. And even if some have an animal familiar (even Ifan, being a human, has a wolf), there's no need for them to understand their furry friends.
The Dwarfs. Here is absolutely no reason to have it. They are awesome miners and mostly also warriors, but why would they need to understand animals?
The last ones, the Human race. This is easy with one exception - Lohse. The humans aren't anything special, why would they understand, what animals are talking about? But Lohse being a medium, playground to some sprites and spirits, even lesser demons, some of those could teach her to speak "animalish". Or perhaps ghosts of magical animals, familiars. Remember Arhu, the cat? Yes, he's a magician, but he can speak in his cat form, perhaps there are some similar to him and if such a talking animal died and his ghost befriends Lohse, I guess you follow from here on.
So those are my thoughts, care to share your views? Remember it's about role play, you can of course give all of them Pet Pal to start with, but if you put some thinking into it, and if you love role play, like I do, and if you happen to find them, then call the A- ... damn wrong movie.
