Is it even possible to strike a balance that would keep everybody happy? If the game is of the grimdark persuasion then I'm immediately not interested; though people who've actually played BG seem to be extremely divided as to whether or not that is an even slightly accurate assessment of the originals. The Bioware games I have played suggest to me it's unlikely they're entirely serious.
On the other hand, how much is too much? I've mentioned elsewhere that I'm currently playing Sacred 2 which is so consistently silly, irrelevant and irreverent that even I as someone who enjoys humour finds it too much.
With Larian games, I found DOS2 was too dark and serious for a Divinity game. I'm just glad that the influx of newcomers who demanded it was totally serious and things like sneaking barrels were removed didn't totally get their way, though the traditional handstand-after-climbing-a-ladder fell victim to their demands.
But I accept it's possible that DOS2 may be considered too silly for a BG game, so if appropriate, tone it down further.
But not grimdark.
