Yesterday night I was thrilled. Creating my first character... saw the 5e dnd rules come true. Really cool!

But... I was just about to click "venture forth" when I realized I had to check all tabs for choices. As most were set with default values.

I missed a step by step introduction.

It actually resulted in one major error and one minor, that made me restart when I met the cleric... My name is "Tav"... Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... it is not... what the heck did I do wrong???
I started giving a name to my... session? I thought it was the name of my character... so I missed the Character name field... ending up with a default name. Once I started all over, I realised I also missed my background. I would have prefered these choices were made step by step.

Finally I had to look up my 5e players handbook to find out Deception bonus as I couldn't remember. Yes... wisdom bonus apply. I would have loved a bit more explanation about the bonuses on my skills; what ability scores improves what.

Perhaps it's just stupid me - or did anyone else end up with "Tav"?

hehe

I don't, but it's a little bit strange to have such default values.
We should have a pop up saying "what is your name"before venturing forth...

Yeah, I think it's a sign, that a lot of aspects in this game's UI needs to be made more obvious.

1. Character's Name might be better with a pop up instead of what we have right now, just like Maximuuus said.

2. Level up process for wizard was not obvious as well, I was confused for a moment as to why I can't press the confirm level up button. Turns out it was because I haven't picked two new spells for my wizard, as the option is hidden, and I need to scroll down the right side menu. (It's not obvious that the menu can be scrolled down)

3. Reading this forum, some people didn't notice that the second character creation is for who your character is attracted to.

Yes, there needs to be more guidance for all the things you guys mentioned. Especially in the beginning when everyone feels a bit lost.

I think the order is a bit wonky for the character creation which stems a lot of the issues.

Most people design a character around a class, so that should be first.

Followed by Race, Appearance

Then background

Then skills

Then name and lover.

Whatever you say, Tav...

But yeah I think the character creation screen could use some work. I usually create mine in a much different sequence than what the order is because it doesn't feel very intuitive currently. But then again, there may not be any solid order to do it in since it probably depends on what you have in mind if you haven't fully decided on what to create prior to creating it.

It might be best to simply not put a default name, and have you choose it at the end. But that still leaves out other things that you can likely miss. I think I've missed something or forgotten to adjust something in most of my character creations, but I'm also not as invested in it since it is just EA.

+1 Needs a pop-up warning for sure before you Venture Forth as Tav.
