As in, both combat and skill checks. I rolled at least a couple 1s, and the cataclysmic effects I expected didn't appear.

In 5E there's actually no thing as a critical success or failure for skill checks "by the book" (though it's a common house rule).
The only rule is crit on a nat 20 attack roll and miss on a nat 1.

dammit, I keep thinking in older editions!
