You should be able to choose, either from the regular 5e options (With a few modifications where this game does something differently.) or from just any weapon and armour set, for what you're starting with. A wizard with a dagger, a Ranger with heavy armour from the perk which gives them heavy armour, and a polearm, a paladin with a longbow, you get where I'm going with this. Rather than having to spend the first half an hour of the game not really playing your character the way you want to play them.

Yeah, I would love this. Just make it like D&DBeyond.

Well, the story is starting in a "character got captured" scenario... not having the regular starting gear options kinda makes sense there. That being said: I'd love to at least have the gear package options presented in the base rules. Just let the PC find it in a chest onboard the ship, shorty after escaping, or something.
As a sidenote... why is stuff like backpacks not presented on the character models? Why are we still being treated to the floating, Dragon Age Origins style "weapons on back"?

Eeeh you're still fully armed and armoured so being able to choose what type of fully armed and armoured would be nice.
Also the more specific conceit is you got booped by one of those tentacles in the middle of doing your own stuff so you'd have your own gear on you, right?

I had this issue when my Strength ranger had to steal his gith companions armor and weapon to be effective.

5e lets you do this. This game should do something similar. Let me pick starter weapons and armor that my character is proficient in.

I would love to start my High Elf Melee fighter with a rapier and shield and medium armor (though I know that last option isn't exactly PHB starter gear)

She makes it clear in game that she has not been promoted to a rank that receives a silver sword - that is one of her major aspirations/goals.

I would love it if there were a little more visual customization for our starting looks and gear. I'm sure there are more options in game, but i feel the armors and appearance there of are too generic and i would love to see more variety in the looks of the starting gear, as well.
for me, i see the whole "prisoners get no gear" angle but it would have been nice to get something for gear in terms of kits and such. It took me a solid hour of gameplay before my rogue found the trap disarming kit, so as the rogue, i could neither search for, spot, or disarm traps, which killed me a few times before i happend upon the kit. I think that first merchant you come across could easily be given some cheap kits and dialog options for them.

IMHO we should start with nothing but some rags, and shortly after we escape find an armory, which enables us to get some weapons and equipment. it worked in BG2.
if the devs are worried about us taking mountains of gear with us, they could limit what we take by having it be dialogue with a chest. you click on the chest and a dialogue box comes up. Let's say you're a fighter.
"you open the chest and find that your equipment has been stored here. in the chest you find a suit of your.... 1: Leather armor. 2: scale armor" etc (obviously it can be limited to some select choices) "you also find your weapons" *insert selection from several weapons types*

Agreed, there was also an idea presented by someone else on the forum to have a short prologue before the Nautiloid intro where people can shop similar to BG1

jMost everyone in the pods are wearing gear. After all it's not a jail cell, it's an incubation chamber. There are no bars it's a psionically enhanced prison created to allow mind flayers to impregnate you easier, they didn't care you had gear on, or off it seems. After all they can just take over your mind, control your body. Resistance is futile!
yeah maybe in character creation you can have an equipment tab. Where you choose your starting armor per 5e rules (sadly no plate armor for my wee lil darf), and a starting weapon. Wizards though don't need that stuff.
