I'm stealing this from a steam comment, but the issue I always had with DOS1 and DOS2, and that I still have with DOS3/BG3, is that turn order is sequential. This makes fights take too long in general and that in turn limits encounter sizes that designers can create. Large boss fights would take 30 minutes in DOS2, and the enemy sizes were still relatively small. Smaller fights with a weak enemies take 2-3 minutes instead of 30 seconds. I doubt this will ever be changed, but this is my #1 issue with combat in Larian studios games, and DOS2 succeeded in spite of this issue. I don't really care about real time with pause, turn based is fine and helps translate D&D rules, but BG3 combat mechanics are in this regard a step back from BG2, a 20 year old game.
More detail of what I'm asking for:
Set turn time to something arbitrary, say 6 seconds. Every six seconds when the clock ticks, all characters take their queued action in order of initiative (or no action / autoattack depending on character setting if the player forgets to select one). If the player performs an action in the middle of the turn, queue it for the next turn. Then you can build options & settings on top of this, such as pause after every 6 second turn, or pause after any character completes their turn. Pause after every character turn gets you DOS1/2 combat, pause after every turn gets you a streamlined version of DOS1/2 combat that helps on difficult fights but isn't overbearing, and regular mode gets you what people erroneously call "real time with pause", which is great for easier fights. But they all use the same underlying system and are all basically the same thing.
Unfortunately Larian has chosen to lock us into option #1, the slowest option, which makes repeating boss fights and replaying the game a chore, and random encounters with goblins a 3 minute waste of time instead of something to add to the mood of whatever zone you're in. Right now this game feels like playing Neverwinter Nights, which I love, with DOS2 combat turns, which I hate, on a cheery tropical island.
