I have been searching for this experience my whole life. Every DnD video game I’ve ever played was initially purchased with the hope and dream “is this the game that feels like I’m playing a tabletop? Is this the game I can finally use to scratch that itch when all my friends can’t get their scheduling in sync?”. So far, this game has come the closest we have ever gotten. We need a more comprehensive and interactive dice rolling mechanic.

God, Larian NAILED the dice roll mechanic on skill checks in dialogue. I get the same edge-of-my-seat feeling as when the DM in my IRL game puts the responsibility on my shoulders for a game-changing dice roll. The suspense, the greasy too-much-pizza-on-a-Friday-night-at-the-game tabletop feeling – I get it all and more when it comes to these elements of the game’s playstyle. Put simply, the dialogue dice rolling mechanic is exactly what I’ve always been looking for in a tabletop emulated video game experience.

My only issue is there isn’t enough of it. Everyone I’ve talked to who has come to this game precisely because they have a tabletop itch other platforms have been unable to scratch feel exactly the same. We want more of the onscreen dice rolls, Larian! I understand dice rolls amidst combat would slow the experience significantly, but perhaps toggling automated rolls or manual rolls in options could be a thing? I know DM mode hasn’t even been teased yet(we all know you’re working on it, Larian, don’t deny it!), but developing a system like this could help significantly in the DM mode.

- Combat should clearly show attack rolls and any saving throws against DC/AC for hit/miss moment before rolling for damage. I don’t know the development resources required for such a thing, but using the combat tracker text box as a “dice tray” to drag an ability onto and have roll results show, perhaps have a cool dice rolling animation and the noise we love so much. Breaking attacks into a clearer attack roll/damage roll type phase will help immensely with creating the 5e tabletop experience.

- In-game exploration should not only have passive skill checks. Players should have option to manually roll certain skill checks like investigation/stealth/etc. When entering a room the player could decide to roll for investigation on a certain room and depending on results an onscreen prompt could inform player of results. If a player has his rogue roll for investigation and the room has a treasure or secret hidden, the treasure or secret could illuminate giving the player the option to pick it up on success, or if he fails a message could show saying “you search the area but find nothing” or something along those lines. More manual skill checks help give a more clear class and character identity as planning and strategizing around skills become more meaningful then just having your whole party run to a corner to see if a icon dings blue or red.

I’d like to start a discussion to see if anyone agrees with this general sentiment of wanting more interactive dice rolls and maybe bounce ideas to offer Larian on how to include more.

I think my ideal solution is to make the toggle-able in the options. I have the exact opposite opinion with regards to onscreen rolls. Just show me what I rolled and let's go - to attempt to "gamify" the dice roll is annoying to me. Hopefully they can satisfy both of us and just make it so we can toggle on or off if we want the onscreen dice roll experience.
