One of the things that I have been the most curious about was the implementation of illusion spells within the game. And now the EA BG3 is out, we have an idea of what direction Larian Studios is going with this school of magic. The two illusion spells that I have tried out so far are minor illusion, and Disguise self. Unfortunately, both spells are sub par at best; but this is early access. At first I was disappointed that the minor illusion spell only spawns a scarecrow, which is the same as ShadowHeart's duplicity, and that we could not chose the form the illusion takes. But after putting a bit more thought into it, I came to realize that the scarecrow is just a place holder dummy; at least I hope so.
As for disguise self, well it just changes your character appearance and nothing else. Now this is what the spell is supposed to do, but I was hoping to, like with minor illusion, be able to pick the form I took. Again, I know that this is early access. So, it is most likely that the current implementation of these spells are just place holders and a way to test them out. So, how can they be improved?
Possible Improvements:
Minor Illusion:
- The option to make a duplicate of any item, that fits within the spells parameters, within the casting character's line of sight.
-- Example: I make a copy of a crate that I see within a room and hide in it, Solid Snake style.
- An option to create a sound effect within an area that the caster can see and within range. This sound will cause those who hear it to investigate the area the sound came from. This would work very similar to the current minor illusion spell, but it does not revel the caster and keeps the NPCs distracted long enough for a player to sneak by.
Disguise Self:
- The ability to pick a humanoid creature, dead or alive, that you can see and copy its appearance. We should not need to worry about dialog interactions, with exception to special cases. It can simply work as a disguise that lets us enter restricted areas without tripping alarms.
-- Example: Back in the top area of the cathedral, I was hoping to use disguise self to take the appearance of one of the bandits I killed. So that I could walk inside the cathedral
without provoking combat. Needless to say that did not work.
- Finally, the ability to save certain forms. right now there is a list of predetermined appearances that we can take; one for each race. It would be nice if instead of have those
predetermined options, we could save the ones that we like in that menu.
-- Example: I found a couple of dead goblins near the crashed ship. It would be nice if I could select one of the bodies and save its form for later use; like sneaking into the goblin
camp. Or I could save the form of that powerful druid, have not done that part yet, and impersonate him to trick the druids into stoping there ritual (This would be one of those special cases where new dialog could be unlocked)
Silent Image:
- Works similar to minor illusion, but you can copy larger objects and creatures.
- You can also copy terrain.
-- Example: I cast the spell and select a corner of a wall and extend it so that it blocks a room or passage way. Works similar to how you can make rooms in any sims game.
These are just a few possible ideas that I had thought of. What do you guys think?
