I was playing the game when it froze up and had to reboot.

When I did and ran dxdiag, I saw that I no longer had Direct 3D.

I messed around with changing the drivers and such and somehow managed to get the AGP function back again, and played this great game for several more hours.

Last night I lost the Direct 3D again and had to change the config to software support in order to get the game to run.

I have seen references to other people having similar problems (config issues, loss of Direct 3D), but not the solutions, any advice/suggestions as to what is happening here?

Is this an issue with the game, or maybe my operating system (XP and dx 8.1)?

Any help would be appreciated.

I run the game with xp and dx8.1 (now even 9.0) NO problems here. Maybe you should try to reinstall DX or div div

Just throwing this out there... But DirectX v9.0 is out, upgrading this is always a good idea (unless it ends up killing your box <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> ). Sorry I couldn't help with more immediate problems, I've never run into this problem or even heard of it before now. This thread here has some stuff on what you may be experiencing -> Configuration Problems , but your probably already checked this out.

carefull! I remember seeing posts on the old board about people having problems with DX 9.0x and this game (among others). If you are not running XP (so you can use the system restore features), make sure you make some manual backups of your sytem intallation before installing 9.0x

cheers

I prefer using a relativ stable Direct/X 8.1 instead of using a new Direct/X 9 without having a grafic card with Direct/X 9 features. And the value of this attitude can be seen in how quickly a Direct/X 9.0a has been released ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Well, upgrading to DX9 has caused me no grief - and it certainly did not create any problems with <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> running. Just fyi...

Here is the latest,

I have been running the game with software support (after disabling the display adapter).

Today, on a whim I decided to re-enable the video driver. (Prior to this when I tried to make any changes with it active, I would get a black screen.) When I enabled the driver, the DirectX functions were back again.

This is the second time I have resurrected this card after losing Direct 3D.

I am now running with the drivers for NVIDA that came with my system (signed). I have my doubts that I have seen the end of my problems, because this is the same configuration I had prior to the last crash.

I wouldn't have installed DirectX 9a at all, except it didn't give me a choice. Some stupid demo installer figured it was more important than the rest of my computer.

true the newest demos and games will "require" dx 9.0. It isnt a waste dough. I would even say it is better!

Last I heard it was still in alpha stages, hence all the bugs. Has it been finished yet?
