Hi. A bit new here but also frustrated enough that I kind of only joined to make this thread.

Let's talk races. And not just races, let's talk about race options. I, like everyone else, saw the funny Kotaku and other articles that showed the studio's call out for how basic white guy is the most popular kind of character to make. I thought it was funny and humorous and great that people were getting called out for it. And then I decided, on a whim, to even check and see what the race options were for Baldur's Gate 3; I do not have it yet but I was excited because I was hopeful to make my favorite DnD characters in a video game.

I was sorely disappointed. How are you going to call your player base out for not taking full advantage of your character creator when you didn't even take full advantage of the entirety of DnD's books and books of races? Seriously guys, its disappointing to look, as someone who LOVES playing monster races, and only see your basic, bland, and extremely boring humanoid characters. Like, Humans, Dwarves, and Elves, oh my! But where are the dragonborns? Where are the Tabaxis? Kobolds? Lizardfolk? Half orcs?!

Like, I'm sorely surprised that not even dragonborns and half orcs are there; they are even a Phb race. I'm not surprised more niche things like Kobolds aren't there but it still stings. It feels really hypocritical to complain about a lack of diversity from your players when you yourselves presented a lack of diverse options for races. Not one single monster race? Really...? Not even an easy one like Half Orc?

I guess my question is, is there a chance for some monster races to be added to this game? Or is it far too late and my plea for at least a dragonborn who I can pretend is a kobold to make an appearance? Off topic but tell your game developer friends, people like Kobolds and would enjoy playing as them in their games. Tiny, greedy little dragon people who are super loyal to their kith and kin are amazeballs and deserve more representation in your games!!! frown

Thank you again for making a lovely game and for sparking so much interest and fun to DnD. But please! Add some monster races!!

Settle down, it’s only Early Access. This is like the appetizer at a restaurant. More content will come, but don’t be disappointed over a lack of races when we haven’t even seen the whole thing.

Its early access and this is a forum intended for criticism and suggestions and feedback. My post is all three. I am allowed to be disappointed and frustrated that my appetizer at a restaurant isnt what I expected and to ask my waiter to actually bring me something different. If you dont want to see people complain or voice frustrations or ask for more, dont come a board specifically intended for doing so.

I'm really surprised so many people are getting bent out of shape about Larian's comment regarding race choice. To me it seemed like they were just teasing and making a friendly joke, not "calling out" in any serious fashion. But I do agree and hope they provide more varied races, though having said that 1) I don't really feel like orcs are all that monstrous, or any less humanoid than drow or dwarves and 2) Tieflings are in and are my favourite race so while I hope we get more I'm already golden on the race front.

It feels like so few games give me a chance to play a Dragonborn character, I would absolutely LOVE if they were able to add them in at some point. I remember seeing something about how a lot of the character face models were modeled off of real people or something like that, so maybe that's why it's all humanoid races at the moment? Here's hoping that at some point in the future we'll get more of the "monstrous" races to play too. ❤

Saying I'm bent out of shape about the joke is seriously stretching it when the heart of my bent out of shapeness is very specifically toward the lack of real diversity for character races in this game. Yes, I am struck with the hypocrisy and find that a bit annoying but my real frustration is again, at the heart, because they've once again passed over more monstrous races for the generic fantasy races instead. As for Orcs being monstrous or not, stating they are humanoid is just splitting hairs. They are not a race that gets classically included in games. As while, yeah, it's great they included tieflings, its not as if including them is a difficult matter. They're humans with borns, different skin colors, and maybe tails.

All I'm saying is stop skimping on monster races. I want to play as a tabaxi or a kobold or a kenku. I almost never make a human, elf, or dwarf character. I seldom make tieflings.

Yeah, sorry if I came off as kind of dickish, looking back my comments were more flippant than they had right to be. Overall I agree with your point and having more monstrous races is something I absolutely want as well.

I have to point out though regarding orcs, if you're going to say that tieflings are humans with horns, different skin colors and maybe tails, then really orcs are just buff humans with green skin and maybe tusks.

You aren't wrong there! Though it does add to the question of,"Why not include them?" since making the model for them isn't super difficult.

That said, I am pleased to see Tieflings finally making an appearance. That addition is really hype even if its the only non classical fantasy race they added. I suppose there are the gith as well but... I was never as enamoured with the gith. I suppose someone is but they weren't my cup of tea.

1. The "such a generic guy you people!" teasing was very light-hearted in nature. With all respect, I think it's ridiculous to take it in any way seriously.

2. Like others said, it's EA. There are more races to come.

3. Don't underestimate how much work it is to create a race. It's not just model/animations. It's fitting all dialogues/interactions to account for the race. Imagine every game aspect reacting properly to a race that's commonly seen raiding villages. It would be a massive undertaking.

4. It's not just your typical humans, dwarves and elves with the occasional halfling. We also have tieflings, githyanki(!) and drow (ok, technically elves, but still). I think the race choice is very good for EA, it includes both bog-standard and exotic.

Whether it was serious or not, the hypocrisy still exists. As for tieflings, gith, and drow, it's still not a very big variety. Drow are literally just more elves. Gith are boring and not very popular and literally only there because they're close attached to mindflayers in the lore. And tiefling is a PhB race. It would be weirder to not have them.

Trying to use the excuse that more races are coming as well is also redundant. Of course more are. This is a board intended to give feedback and make suggestions. I have done that by saying,"Add more monster races." I also criticized their lack of racial options which is again. Feedback. If you dont want to see feedback or criticism, maybe dont read threads in a board literally called Suggestions and Feedback.
