i cannot find the alchemist. where is that cannibal. also, everytime i try to enter the 3 battlefield, i lock up. i installed the 1.42 patch, did not help.

Who gave you the quest, please? I can tell you where you he is, but this is the main plot line - and I'd like to know which quest you are referring to. I want to prevent you from busting something.

after i told the chieftan's son that the flooge frogs were the cause of the plague, he told me to go into the wild and find the alchemist.

Ok - go to the fire area - and go straight to him, please. He has an important quest for you => main plot. After that, exploring the area shoudl be safe. Maybe I'm overcautious...
