I seem to be collecting quite a few potatoes, carrots, and the occasional jug of ale or loaf of bread.

Do these have any use other than to barter away? At least some of them say 'Bonus Action' on them; does this mean that if in combat I take time to eat a carrot, I get an extra move? Are they for some cooking/crafting system yet unimplemented?

Or is there some more sinister purpose for them?

Right now they heal you for a bunch of HP, which probably shouldn't be in the game.

And can be used while in range of people.

I don't know if they even have played DnD lol

I know, right? Everybody knows that to heal yourself in the middle of a fight, you need whiskey.

It is quite useful if you have to get into a duel with an
arcane tower
.

Not that these are in the game so you should of course never be happy for additional healing sources.

Solo kill list: One stupid evil (displayed alignment) Githyanki warrior, a dark grove, a Zhentarim hideout full of "experienced" rogues, half a Goblin camp including two hobgoblins, two minotaurs, a bunch of underworld monsters and their wannabe sorcerous overlord

Eating food for healing should definitively not be in the game as it is now. In tabletop, stopping to eat, rest and heal is called a short rest, which they’ve limited to only 1 - increasing the need to use long rests.

It’s D&D, never ever in my tabletop game have I made a note of how many carrots I’m carrying. Short rests is what they want to simulate - so just give us 2 or 3 per long rest instead of inventory filler crap.

You eat pork chops in combat as a bonus action to get more powerful heals than what the party Cleric can provide with spells. Simple.

I wouldn't mind seeing the healing property of food staying, I just don't want them able to be used outside of short rests (no eating 200 cheese wheels to restore all the hit points). Just to be clear, when I say I want the healing property of food to stay and usable during a short rest, I would like it if when we do a short rest, we have the option of consuming one of these food items as part of the short rest to either A) restore hit points instead of expending a Hit Die, or B) increase the number of hit points restored when expending a Hit Die. I definitely do not want food items to be a replacement or alternatives to healing potions.

I honestly don't think anything needs to change at this point with regards to the healing properties of food. Most food only heals around 5hp I've found, and with the scarcity of short rests and healing potions I would not have been able to manage the game without them being freely edible.

Healing potions are already abundant enough in this game, you can find about 30 before even crossing the first bridge into goblin territory.
