There are two NPCs that I honestly don't understand why they are not party members, maybe because their classes are not implemented but still (spoilers btw) the two I speak of are the tiefling karlach that you save from the paladins how has a tadpole in her head and has a VERY interesting background in my opinion where she is on the run from Zareal the ruler of avernes (I think she could be a ranger? Or a fighter? Evil/neutral conquest Paladin kind of fits her to) and the druid Helsin that you save near the end talks about coming with you and leaving his life behind to go with you but instead he sits in your camp? seems a waste to me, It's a ton of work for sure but the current amount of party members at least for me is very small and both those NPCs really did look like great, as a side note I think that maybe it would be a good idea to allow players to reach 5 later down the track in order to somewhat survive the Underdark part of act 1 (i barely manged and its was mostly dew to cheesing some encounters)

Personally I'd love to see the Tiefling bard you meet just outside the Druid Encampment become a companion, or at least a permanent fixture to your camp.

She's a horned Disney Princess!

Alternatively, the elven druid merchant who is trying to scout and send messages via birds. She seemed nice.

She's nice but her role is kinda filled by Volo how also sings and does bard things the main issues I see is that all party mambers have to have tadpoles allthogh katlach does have one but the rest don't, though I like them more some of the party members (astroin as such an ass)

A dataminer looked into the files and found that Karlach will be a companion. There's another upcoming companion, Helia the werewolf, that apparently had a "Helia or Halsin" reference in the code but nothing about Halsin being a companion.

I'd honestly kinda want a duergar companion as well - while I'd just take any dwarf fighter I really like the idea of a surly duergar fighter or paladin accompanying us, just so I can have another option for a dedicated frontline tank aside from Lae'zel who... well, I killed her with the tiefling scenario thinking I could rez her. Couldn't. And really didn't feel a major loss with her death.

Would be cool to have a companion that only joins you if you go the Tadpole/Absolute route.

I know it! At the moment her qust is bugged but it definitely looks like you can ask her to join (it loops back to the turn in conversation every time you talk to her)
