Dear Devs!
Thank you for your hard work on making BG:3, I've been literally waiting half my life for a successor to the Baldur's Gate series. Since this is an Early Access version, I'd like to give you my feedback, both as a player of digital and analog roleplaying games.
Inventory, Loot:
1.) The inventory system is a bit... oldschool, I guess? I can relate to wanting to reproduce the feeling of the old BG titles, but not everything old is good. There are good examples for a use of a shared inventory with carry weight restrictions to a single character, even in a DnD based game. Take Pathfinder: Kingmaker for example - limited weight for a single character in what he can wear and or carry in person, shared inventory for all the rest. This would make things so much more comfortable without ruining the roleplay experience.
2.) Another matter is the sharing of items. Do not allow us to swap items between characters in midfight, unless the characters are close to each other and use at least a bonus action for that. One can exploit that heavily (I did throw half my inventory on the Cambions on the mindflayer ship - which was absolutely hilarious, but felt also very wrong).
3.) An option for automatically sorting the items all the time would be great. Doing it manually every so often is a bit annoying.
4.) Selecting multiple items to stash away in camp at once would also be a real QoL feature.
5.) There are way too many containers to loot. Yes I know, the roleplayer in me likes the idea to be able to open every crate, but in a computer game I find it both inpractical and disappointing. Besides - imagine your dungeon masters reaction to you saying "Ooookay, I am going to loot every piece of random crate in this entire area and pick up every scrap nail I find, see you around folks!". My party would bury their faces at that moment. So in short - less crates to loot, to make the loot you get (even the scraps and dirty goblets) more "valueable".
Dialouges
5.) Let us change companions in certain situations where a skillcheck is demanded. Take the burning log lying on the man in waukeen's rest for example. In a classic tabletop situation my mage would never consider trying to lift it (well, he'd probably let them all burn, but that's an entirely different story), he'd ask the 2.10 brute with all muscles but no wits to lift it for him.
6.) Please make it so that we only enter a dialogue screen with npc's if we can actually reply to them. It was very painful to speek with every Tiefling and Goblin without giving an answer myself.
UI
7.) "Chained characters" - yeah.... please scrub that feature entirely and give us back the good old "select all"-feature. The entire system just makes for a loot of more unnecessary clicks without any benefits. You could even go further than other games and make it as comfortable as clicking once to select one party member and twice to select all (or viceversa). That would be really awesome!
8.) Unlock the camera please. I want to see the edge of the (explored) map, command my party there, get a cup of coffee and curse myself for having forgotten an enemy that killed them all.
9.) A real pause button please, at least when you press ESC.
10.) More detailed character sheets would also be very nice. Just make them scrollable, these dropdown menus on every ability makes for an aweful lot of clicking. We play Baldur's Gate guys, we really dooooo like to read.
11.) Give us a preview on character developement, so we can plan our level progression. Again, Pathfinder: Kingmaker in it's current state is a pretty good example for a DnD game to do that.
12.) A real chat and combatlog! Copy and paste from BG:2 here, that will suffice. We do want to read up past conversations, in case we missed something.
Difficulty
13.) Remove the indicators for the spell effects on higher difficulties. I know, there is but one difficulty so far, just saying it though. Thinking about the coop-mode - nothing compares to a firemage toasting it's teammates, because he cannot use his own spells properly (damn you Rastafan!).
14.) Probably planned anyway since you had that in D:OS2, but I am still advocating for it here. Hardcore mode with only a single save file. It really doesn't have to be that "die once, game over"-shit, that's just frustrating in a computer game, but please allow the hardcore players among us to save but once. And while we're at it, make it possible to quicksave and quickload in that hardcore mode, such a QoL feature.
Reading this, it sounds like I had issues with the game, which was definetly not the case! I absolutely loved it so far. So keep up the amazing work, hopefully this gets read, so that that I can sit here in another 20 years, waiting for BG:4 to release.
cheers!
