When an enemy is near death (or even otherwise) and standing close to one my characters, the enemy will sometimes walk away (either to gain distance or to attack another character). This generates an attack of opportunity (for my characters) that can end up killing the enemy.

Could the enemy choose instead to not open himself/herself to an attack of opportunity, by not moving away? At least at higher difficulty levels (i.e. "tactician")?

That would be for fun for me.

disengage exists for monsters too. They are probably just too greedy with their action economy.

well... in 5e, disengage costs an action. and this situation would cost the baddies an attack. I dont know how this AI is reacting exactly, I feel like its because disengage is a bonus action, and only the Goblins get to use it. Everything else is left without the option to disengage becuase Larian knew better than to give everything in the game bonus action disengage... they just need to put it in as an action so its not brokenly used by every NPC but every NPC has the option to flee

I see. That’s a good point.

I was also thinking the enemies might just keep hacking away at my characters, possibly defeating my party — rather than getting themselves killed by giving my players an unnecessary attack of opportunity.
