OK, so if you go there in the citadel (far south of the map), there's a room behind boxes with a hatch in it. Down the hatch there are jail cells, the far room has a torture book with some spawning ghosts. Anyways, the first jail cell has a box locked away in the corner, barely hidden. Is there a key somewhere, seeing as how lockpick doesn't work?

The key is in the parcours. Talk to the parcour master Laurel (IIRC) in the drill grounds and accept his challenge.

you didnt put on the citadel armour at the beginning.

the DK would have told you to disguise yourself. thats why ALL guards attack and you've been killing everything.

you'll have to restart a save prior to entering those 2 barracks levels if you want to do the quests and get the 100,000+ exp.

I had the same problem. Prior to the 1.42 patch, I was at the Parcours section. From the moment I walked in I was attacked by all of the guards, named and unnamed. I had read posts where people were saying they 'talked' with characters in the Parcours area, (i.e., talk with the Cook, or talk with the Drilling Instructor, etc.) but I thought they were referring to a 'different' area, other than the Parcours. Come to find out after I restarted the game from the beginning (after I patched to 1.42), I had missed all of the drill room/Parcours quests. Prior to 1.42 I couldn't talk to ANY of the guards. There was no "Rum" quest. The only NPCs that I could interact with were the imps. And on top of all of that, whenever I killed the guards, I would find (no kidding) no less than a total of at least 700 arrows (of every make, normal, splitters, explosives, spiritual, ethereal, poison, water, fire, earth, air, etc.) I didn't mind *that* bug. LOL So, perhaps the reason you haven't been able to 'talk' with anyone at the Parcours is because you're not patched to 1.42.

(Just a thought). This was nearly a game stopper for me because I had already restarted the game several times due to other bugs in previous patches. I'm glad I stuck with the game, though. I was finally able to generate those quests and play the game as it was intended.

EDIT: Please note: I wore the Citadel uniform. I got it from the 1st guard I killed. So, I was in disguise AND I was still attacked. I think my game was simply buggy. (Otherwise, that seems to be a pretty stiff penalty for simply neglecting to put on a uniform. Or am I misunderstanding???)

As soon as I'm done with Act 4, I'll verify Act 1 for EV 1.42 - I was never attacked when wearing this armour.

Possible explanations => picking up another citadel armour - taking it off in the BF and then putting on the wrong one then?
Exiting via BF and forgetting to put it on before you entered the citadel again?
Not sure => a broken armour (unnoticed?)
Taking it off in Gen. Bram's hatch and forgetting to put it on?

Some guards WILL attack => the ones in the guard room (NW) - the DK, of course - the guards wanting your papers. Those guarding exit corridors.
Drill officer and his cronies will attack, if you give the wrong answer in his Drill Officer's Test (but only then).

One couple of guards can be bribed.

Oh, rest assured, DK told me to wear the armor as a disguise, and I've found at least 5 sets of Citadel armor.

I'm just not that kind of guy, I'd prefer to kill everything.

Although, it kind of pisses me off that designs like this enter into the game... It's not very fair to restrict rewards and xp to people that like to wimp out of good fights. Why didn't whoever gives it drop the key when I killed him?

Do what I did. Put it on, do all the quests. Then take it off and shout "Surpise"!!!

it kind of pisses ME off, when combat is called a royal discipline
If you're the kind of killing everything - then take the consequences like a... like a... well, how do you call them... warriors? No brains, just muscles?

Sheesh... killers.. and then moaning about lost XP.

[color:"orange"] PLEASE NOTE: For anyone who was able to wade through and actually understand the above message that I left yesterday, I must apologize. That game was not 'buggy'. I found an older saved game, loaded it and sure enough the reason I was attacked by all of the guards and soldiers was because I [color:"red"] did not [/color] [color:"orange"] wear the disguise.

Last night I was able to replay that earlier game, using those characters and the thousands of arrows I received. I'm still not sure if having that many arrows was a design feature or if it was a bug. (But I ain't complain'n.)

At any rate, I'm having more fun with the game now because I am so attached to those early characters as opposed to the ones I created 2 days ago. Both are wizards and it's much more enjoyable (for me) to play that way.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience or confusion my misinformation caused anyone.
