This is going to be long so buckle up if you really want to read this.
After a few different play throughs on different characters and making some different choices
Picking to stay sided with the druids or joining the goblins/dark elves and the absolute
. I have to say I enjoy the fact that your choice can make changes into the story and the world. I would say that I am disappointed not seeing all the classes. I understand cant have everything in early access, but some of more simplistic things could be done. Barbarian pretty straight foreword and a lot of the subclasses are simple. I also miss not having all the spells that we are used to, and that some classes use on the regular. For Ex: Greenflame blade for Eldritchknight is used frequently. Some of the Eldritch invocations for warlocks. We have the push, but not the pull, and so on.
I do question how some spells make work especially some reactionary ones; Shield, and absorb elements. I have seen hellish rebuke, and though not 100% certain and will have to look again. If you cast it it uses the spell slot even if you never get hit, and if that is the case it is a waste of resources that normally you would not use and for hybrid spellcasters or spellcasters with few spell slots that is really important. Just something to think about. I don't have a solution other than the game pausing as someone targets you with something and you have that spell, but also not knowing the roll to hit makes it difficult as well. Now that may be to DnD and difficult to translate to a video game platform, and that's fine just something I wonder about.
That being said I know we all want this to be the best DnD video game that has ever been, but realistically not everyone is going to be happy about it. Some people may hate a aspect of it that's too much tabletop feeling, and some that's the opposite. We have to keep in mind this is after all a video game doing their best to have the DnD feeling. One major aspect i have seen people hate on is the Dice rolling, and yeah seeing it roll and fail can suck, but in any rpg game where you try and convince an npc to do something, and it either gives you a % chance of success or some games don't even give you that, but you fail it anyway. Dice are being rolled for the outcome as it is an algorithm running in the back that you just don't see. So maybe there needs to be an option where it hides the dice roll, and just gives you the result without it i dunno, but no matter what the dice roll in every video game rather you see it or not.
Now onto some other things. Visually the game looks amazing the level of detail in things are great. Are there quirks.. yes.. it's early access. People supposed to have cups and don't.. odd body movements it's not perfect but again.. alpha. Spell effects are wonderful I wondered how Eldritch blast was going to look since it's one spell you can really put a lot of self flavor into, and i was not disappointed. Could we be allowed to color it.. or our pact change it slightly sure, but if not it is fine the way it is. As far as companions go they are interesting all with their own little hidden stories. I both love and dislike the fact most of them are not heroic they are self serving and very focused on one thing, and though yes that is important, but most don't like it when you go out of your way to help someone.. now notice I said dislike, and not counter love with hate.. that is because not only do some not mind these heroic actions there are a few moments where those that don't will turn their mind to it being acceptable, and that builds depth so not bad. Would i like a little more variation from the start? sure Allowing us to pick a alignment to start with and giving us a set of companions to mimic it or something like a simple pick of Self serving versus serving the people and have a few companions that are like minded but not always, and can change over course of the game as well as you being able to swap them out for others eventually later in the game.
The game does have me wondering a lot of things in the story, but that's a good thing it has me hooked and wanting to see where it goes from here, and can not wait for the fully released game, and I hope it is massive or has multiple campaign settings even ones that exist before this time.. for example playing like Curse of Strahd or Rise of Tiamat, but not 100% to the letter think of it as maybe something like this.
You reach baldurs gate and you hear a bard telling a tale of some adventurers who found a land called Barovia.. so on, and it unlocks you being able to play there, but as your own characters as if day dreaming.. or dreaming at camp of yourself ding that adventure. That would be something a lot may enjoy being able to visually see all of these old stories brought to life.
All in all i think this is turning out so far to be a great game. I hope it gets bigger and can be a lot more story to it, but knowing that I know it has to end at some point as do all stories. Something I think a majority of us would love is a roadmap of what you(Larian Studios) plan on doing between now and full release of the game. This way those that want to test every little thing can, and those that maybe want to test only certain aspects can freely do so and not feel stuck with the.. "Oh well they came out with this I dunno if I want to bother not until X or Z comes out." And it never does or comes so far down the road they forget the game or lose interest in testing it. In the end this is Alpha and there is a lot to come, and I am looking foreword to it, and doing my best to make it a better game.
Good job Larian keep up the good work, and I'm looking foreword to the progress.
All the above opinions are just that my opinions on what could make the game better or questions I may have.. Take them or leave them with a grain of Salt. Good luck in all your future adventures.
