Hey, so I'm in 10 hours and so far I really like the game. I just wanted to give you my feedback on the current state of the game (just in case you are interested). Some background info: I played all important CRPGs since Bard's Tale 1 on my C64 and I'm also a big fan of BG2. As I said I really like the game, the story, the atmosphere, the combat, the characters... that's why I do not want to focus on the positive points. There are a lot of them, but the goal of this feedback should be to improve the lesser well done parts.
So here we go:
1. the auto targeting of low AC characters needs to be optimized. We need some kind of a general threat system so my Wizards are not killed before it's my turn. Combat should not be based around the clairvoyant knowledge of an upcoming fight (aka quickload) and a pre-fight positioning.
2. I really, really having a hard time figuring out the ground effects. In DOS2 it was pretty easy to see everything, in BG3 it's pretty difficult. Also there are too many ground effects.
3. The general overview of the battlefield needs to be optimized. For example if you roll a 20 there's a neat critical animation but that is often blocking the amount of damage I did. If you cast spells I often have no idea what happened (resisted?). I think that it would be great idea to have more "explanations" of what happened outside of the (really small) combat log. Maybe with an onscreen text above the heads.
4. Several times I tried to jump somewhere and triggered an Opportunity Attack without understand why. I'd suggest a better notice system when you are going the trigger an OA.
5. Like in DOS2, the whole trade (and inventory) window is a mess. Why on earth does everybody needs to sell their items separately? If I'm with a group in a sales situation, you put everything on the table and the barter character will make the price for everything. There's no for doing this all individually and it would be a real quality of life improvement.
6. Speaking of items: please reduce the sheer numbers. The items you can see with ALT are great. But it seems to me like this is 5% of the overall item pool with all the chests, drawers and book boards to be checked. Often you can find really useful potions there, meaning there's an incentive to click on EVERYTHING. Please tone this down. At my current playthrough, I'd need an hour to sort my inventory. At least do different color codes for useless vendor trash and useful items.
7. Another huge issue I already had with DOS2 - sometimes characters get stuck, because they do not want to cross a stream. I know it's a big BG joke that some characters need to catch up, but can you solve this somehow? Also areas like the Hag's place, it takes ages to have everyone jump manually. Any chance your party can just follow the lead?
8. Consider making short rests usable more than once per day. Being forced to do a (two-loading-screens) long rest takes the fun and the speed out of the game. Spells do not replenish while doing a small rest, but HP do. It would be a decent middle ground (like the "fix" command in early GoldBox games).
9. Can you add some "containers" for a better overview of your combat bar? Like in DOS2, my whole bar is full of single potions, spells and scrolls. Why not have one "container" for your scrolls and one for your potions? And your spells categorized in spell levels. I know it's working with bags, but it's done manually and this should be an automatic feature.
Anyway, love the game. I already have so much fun with the EA that I cannot even imagine what happens after release.
