So I am pretty new to DnD and I really appreciate Larian helping me along by giving me preset backstories to add some flair to my background.

The game starts with my character snatched from somewhere and along that teleporting dragon chase I land somewhere.

I have made several characters and one of the ones that sticks with me is a drow ranger with a noble background.

So shouldn't my armor reflect that?
Some drow spider themed starting armor? Why am I in a crappy leather garb?

This brings me to the Origine characters as well.
It feels wrong upgrading their armor. Laezel should keep her Gith armor, shadowheart her unique chainmail armor.
I feel bad replacing their old armor while I feel bad because I don't think my character should look like a petty adventurer so the whole game I am trying to find the armor that should fit my backstory.

Maybe my drow should have their drow noble/acolyte/criminal/entertainer/etc gear when I start the game.

And maybe... the game should allow us to upgrade the stats but keep the original look?

Character creation should include these options as well as the face and body (and just so we are clear we need more options in that department too jewelry, scars, blindfolds, piercings and etc)

I agree. By the 5E books, your starting equipment comes from your class + your background. For example, your noble ranger should have

* A set of fine clothes, a signet ring, a scroll of pedigree, and a purse containing 25 gp (from noble background)
* This stuff for ranger:

(a) scale mail or (b) leather armor
(a) two shortswords or (b) two simple melee weapons
(a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
A longbow and a quiver of 20 arrows

Now, there's some degree of "start as a prisoner on the ship", but it looks like the mindflayers left others their stuff, so it doesn't seem completely unreasonable.

I agree with both your sentiments but especially with the companion equipment aspect. It's always a bummer when a game gives companions cool, unique starting armour that you have to replace because it's quickly overshadowed by new stuff. I like what Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire did in that regard, the game had a system where unique equipment could be upgraded, so your companions could keep their signature looks and get them upgraded continually as the game progressed so they could be viable later in the game.

The PoE approach is one way. Another would be to allow at least basic magic to be transferred between items -- maybe there's a crafter somewhere who could do this for you. That way, you could add a basic enchantment to the Gith armor rather than needing to swap it out. This would also help with the "oh, another +1 greataxe -- too bad I only have one character who uses two-handed weapons" thing.

Isn't this just an extension of the call for better cosmetic gear? I, for one, would certainly welcome a variety of looks that I can choose for my character, but I'm not sure that the EA is the time for this to be a priority.

Once the game is more matured and the more important bugs and quirks ironed out, perhaps Larian will pursue cosmetic options and allow starting PCs to choose from an appropriate 'wardrobe' of starting gear. The popularity of cosmetic gear shopping in many MMOs suggests that there is a substantial CRPG player base who value such things. I, for one, have spent a fortune on cosmetic gear in BDO, a fortune that offers no in-game advantage at all. Looking good is important, even when you are fighting zombies.

I understand the sentiment but spider themed armor? If you drow worships lloth even if theyre in bg I doubt they would want to draw attention to that.

Nitpicking aside, I agree. Its weird to me that we dont get the starting options for the phb...

Yeah I was just using it as an example to make a point.
I don't think a drow noble would wear the same thing as a wood elf.
So perhaps at the game start there is a variety of starting armor you could choose and maybe control their textures as well?

So maybe my drow would be in black or white clothing while my wood elf is in green and brown clothing.

And the clothing/armor is what I choose it to be... I just need a limited selection of armor available.
Not all the armors in the game need to be available.
And if its a cleric/acolyte of some god or order maybe have some texture symbols that you could select.

All I am saying this could be a really nice feature.
Otherwise the entire game you are trying to find the gear that your character should have been wearing in the first place.

I dont think thats a nice feeling to have.

More options and variety in the cosmetic department would defenitly be greatly appreciated. And the armour that shadowheart has prpves that its on the list of things ingame. My cleric with medium armour had the same gear but her armor looks vastly.different. i hope they have more things like that and not just for the companion npc's

I agree, picking your starting gear is actually DND.

Why my fighter doesn't have a shield if it's how I want to start it.

I would simply like to agree, that one's background and race should play a role in our starting gear.

As for the cosmetic side of your post, I like the idea of having a 'saved' character depiction, so if you change gear your character will still maintain the same armor appearance. I agree that it is a bit wonky when all my leather-wearing companions look exactly the same, all my plate wearing companions look exactly the same, etc., when they have such fantastic unique sets of armor at the beginning. If we could 'update' this 'saved' character depiction as time went on, when we found armor that we liked more, that would be great.
