I've had two big occassions of Wyll disregarding player action during my first run. I reloaded and tried to change minor things about the way I fulfilled a quest in order to fix this but none have worked.

First, when saving the Gnome from the Windmill, I chose to do exactly as Wyll said and I forced the Goblin in question into surrender before allowing him to answer Wyll's questions. Then I killed the Goblin as Wyll instructed as well. Approval was triggered from Wyll consistent with these choices. However, when speaking to Wyll after this, he admonishes the MC for killing the Goblin before he could ask his questions, not acknowledging the interrogation that took place mere seconds before.

A similar issue happened after "Rescue the Trapped Man." I helped the flaming fist smash the gate, searched for survivors a rescued Benryn from the fire successfully and spoke with him about the dowry. The next day, Wyll lamented with the MC on the road that we stood back and did nothing when the Flaming Fist asked for help and a Grand Duke's home burned.

Finally, a second bug I found with the Grand Duke's home itself. I broke down the wall directly behind where I found Benryn in order to get everyone to safety. From there I attempted to exit the home through an in state, not on fire room just below. I went down the stairs only to find that the game considered all the tiled floor to be unreachable. Not a single character was able to walk on the perfectly level not on fire flooring. The only solution (besides taking my chances turning around and walking through fire) was to take control of each party member and, one-by-one, like they were playing a game of the floor is lava, having them hop from the area beneath the stairs to wood flooring on the other side of the room and then out the door. They weren't even particularly good at this floor is lava game, since they were all perfectly content to step on the "inaccessible" tile when running into a jump, they just refused to walk on it the normal way.

I thought the two Wyll issues might just be placeholder dialogue before his appropriate responses are written/voiced/added etc., but I know for sure that last thing was a big deal so I decided to post all of them here at once. Hope this is helpful.

+1 for the whole thing. Had the exact same results in both occasions even after loading and trying again, just to see if something changed.

In case of the Trapped Man, you need to rescue him a certain way:

  • First enter the building by helping the Flaming Fist with the main door or go to the right wing of the building, where the barrel is blocking the doorway, then jump to the second floor and there will be a locked door.
  • Get the woman.
  • Go to Benryn, but not trough the door on the right. First, destroy the door on the left, help him and tell him to follow you.
  • You need to get out of the building trough the main entrance (the issue I had is that I lead him trough the door on the balcony and it didn't count as "saving him").

To finish the quest:

  • Talk to Benryn.
  • Find his wife's body (left wing of the inn, second floor) and tell him where she is.
  • Then talk with the wife using "Speak with the dead" spell. She will tell you where Brenryn's sister's ring is (if you don't have the amulet or the scroll of Speak with the dead: the ring in question is in the barn, in a stack of hay)
  • Give him the ring. An done. Wyll stops complaining.

So, looks like at the moment, going left and saving him that way doesn't count as success, even if you talk to the wife and get him the ring. And the same conversation with Wyll happens if you save him "the right way", but don't get him the ring. That's in my case, anyway.

[Update]: Nope, the quest is done but after 2 long rests Wyll had his "we did nothing" complaint.
