As I've been exploring the game I've had NPCs randomly take damage from each other or hit neutral npcs by walking past for a reason I couldn't discern.
While trying a "shortcut" from the Druid Grove to Risen Road without using feather fall, I found out avoiding falling damage from a jump that normally would
cause it gives the character an "aura of fall damage". This is why my companions occasionally take damage from each other or me after a jump.

  • Jumping again gives you the full damage you were supposed to take regardless of the distance. Though I have not been able to test if I can increase the value from a longer jump as I've not found one I can live through.
  • Being shoved while under the effect still causes you damage but it's reduced. Possibly because being shoved, even on flat land is considered falling. Not sure why the damage is reduced.
  • Picking up a crate removes the effect. I believe due to the object being dragged under your character before going into your inventory. It displaces your character then resets them to the ground perhaps?
  • Taking damage via a puddle or causing enough damage by standing near people/objects with HP reduces the incoming damage when you fall again.
  • Fast travel does not end the effect. Loading your game does.
  • Getting into a conversation does not end the effect either.
  • The walking damage is very difficult and maybe impossible to do during combat as characters do not pass close enough to each other for the damage to be caused.
  • Objects with infinite HP/no HP value do not take any instance of damage even if they can be targeted by attacks.
