Hey guys, game is looking smashing, and just from the first early access release we can tell it's gonna be huge(in popularity and game size)!
I want it a TINY bit huger =) After coming from Greedfall last year, it's going to be a tough pill to swallow going back to having my weapons and whatnot clinging on to me via magnets and invisible velco. I (hoping we) need a safe and fashionable way to walk about while not engaged!

Thanks!

Last time, I saw my character putting on his back a torch which was on FIRE... Funny also that it didn't hurt the character at all...

Also if I may add, why on earth would someone carry a staff in his back? It's just so silly... Or is it an homage to World of Warcraft?

Can't you just make a character hold the staff in one of his hands all the time? even when walking and running, you know... like in real life?!

Another voice calling for ditching the back-scabbards and storing of weapons there. They are just stupid and lazy and look awful. Ever tried drawing a four-foot sword from over your shoulder? Even an orangutan would struggle.

Quite. And it's unnecessary: I can yank a hand-and-a-half out of an ordinary belt scabbard in spite of being neither particularly tall nor in possession of very long arms; anything bigger than that would go on a cart or something.

When it comes to realism, back-scabbards are up there with "swords weigh 40 lbs and claymores are 8' long!"

Good video, this guy is awesome https://youtu.be/0EWi2DnDoaI (whole channel is good)

What is the problem you are solving? Does your proposed change solve the problem? Is your change feasible? What else will be affected by your change? Will your change impact revenue? Does your change align with the goals and strategies of the organizations (Larian, WotC)?

Had a quick glance; interesting. Reminds me of the "everything they teach about bows is wrong" video I saw some time ago. I think in the case of the back-scabbard there's less documentary evidence (though I am by no means an expert) and people tend to gravitate to whatever works.

In my case I can't really be trusted with swords. Mine are *very* overdue for some TLC as they're in danger of going rusty but if I pick one up I'll just drop it on my foot.

Historians like re-enactors for this reason. I can read up all I want and research as many archival documents as are available to me, but it take someone actually putting things into practice to see what works. Humans are pretty much unchanged from the Medieval period, so if a modern human finds it impossible to (say) draw a longsword from their back, then it is very likely that people would have found the same thing in the C15th.

Haha, yeah, I rigged mine, a hand a half, and back is impossible!

Quivers are top priority I think, no?

Please do keep in mind, that the "magnetic sword on back" solution is hardly ever a matter of laziness. In Baldur's Gate 3 there will likely be a huge variety of weapons and armour, which will have to work together in almost any possible combination. Wearing your scabbard on your left hip may look fine if you're using a rapier and are wearing a leather armour, but might cause clipping issues when wearing a full plate armour. Wearing the weapons on the back is a simplification, which would be impractical in real life, no argument there, but implementing realistic scabbards/sheaths/straps would make things really complicated. It would also add an incredible amount of opportunities for mistakes, like the aforementioned clipping issues, which would look even worse than a two handed sword on the back. Considering that, I don't think we will get this anytime soon. Of course, there are always modders...

Yeah I don’t know why we need to try and rewrite all of video game history. Weapons on back is in everything from Mass Effect to Bannerlord. It’s not laziness. It’s deliberate choice. Seeing the weapons on the back tells the player at a glance the role of the character, let’s them appreciate some new weapon they just found, and keeps the devs from having to script 80 different weapon drawing animations.

LeaZal basically drags her two-handed behind her already. I’d say lower the fantasy stylization 50% before asking for hip-draw.

I’m sure a modded will give you hip draw later. Also keep in mind one of the most popular mods for Skyrim was a literally a swords on back mod. Some things we just don’t question because it’s a staple in games, like finding fresh food or new armor in a coffin.

I should have put that in the title too, but I thought the "etc" portion would cover quivers, for arrows and bolts. It's all these things that really make me really dig into a game. If Mount and Blade and Greedfall can pull it off, I'm quite sure the clever folks at Larian can as well (thats not trying to be be condescending, to those other developers) =) I'm quite sure that where they put them(weapons) right now was just the quick and easy to get things moving along.

Agreed... I'm replaying Pathfinder KM right now, and while the character models aren't that detailed in that game, I think they handled the gear stuff really well. You cannot only see all weapons you have currently equipped in your various weapon sets, but also cloaks, bracers, quivers, sheaths and lanterns on the character's belts.

Fun fact (just for me, to be honest): this was the very first thing I "complained" about when the first in-engine trailer was released few months ago.

You know what? I don't even give a shit if the animation to extract the weapon matches accurately. I just hate "floating weapons glued to the back of the character" as an aesthetic choice. I think it looks horrid.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

I could maybe deal with swords on the back (with scabbards Witcher-style), but daggers... They look so silly. Also warhammers. My back hurts when I think about it.

It was stupid in Dragon Age, and it's still stupid a decade later... sad thing is, it was already done much better in other, "cheaper" games.
