It seems that the Bulette has not only a habit of leaping towards even a single one of my characters, but a habit of knowing that apparently it can one shot any of my characters by jumping at it.

Not only that, but it can also one shot someone by jumping at it, but then just walk over to the next person and one shot them by swiping at them.

My characters are all level 4, which is max right now, so there doesn't seem to be much I can do in this instance. Especially since Jump is ALSO DISENGAGE.

I imagine there should be a balance some where here.

I had mixed experiences with it. First time I got pwned; badly. Second was a push-over. I'm not really sure what if anything changed in the interim but the respective experiences seemed rather extreme for random chance.

A Bulette is CR5 under 5e rules. That suggests that any fight against it at level 4 will be a difficult one. Bulettes were always a bit of nasty encounter (especially for halflings and gnomes who they saw as tasty snacks), but they were handy to making super-tough armour and shields.

Without even exaggerating, this level 5 Bulette can TPK an entire party of level 4s, in a single round. Period.

Yeah, in PnP they are best avoided. It sounds like this one might be same.

Bane and Bless can really make the difference, I found.

Hard to maintain concentration with that jump attack. I had the best success when I spread out my party couldn't be gotten all in one jump — and then I got lucky with a poison critical hit on my first attack.

Hard to avoid when it attack your party via a surprise underground prone attack that you can't see coming...
