I am sort of a scrub of Dungeons & Dragons lore and I have not played Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 since release and I was about 12 years old so maybe I'm forgetting something but if Volo is just a regular Human and this game takes place 100 years after the original shouldn't Volo be a pile of dust? Like I said I am not ultra familiar with the lore or maybe I forgot something but what's the deal with this eternal 50 year old?

Volo spent about 100 years trapped by an Imprisonment spell.

The Volo Age followed the Age of Mintiper Moonsilver.

Volo is a powerful magic-user and at a certain point in Faerun it's relatively easy for such spell-casters to find access to methods of immortality. Basically, they take the Epic Boon that grants immunity to age sometime after 20th level.

Volo has been twisting the truth, feeding his ego, and getting people killed through sheer incompetence and idiocy for centuries.

There was one point in a paper game that a GM had us encounter Volo and my character failed her history check to recognize him. The GM could practically TASTE my desire to flee but having no IC reason to do so.

That’s not quite right. Volo had stats in 2E, where he was only level 5. In 5E he is only level 1. He is FR’s poster child for failing upward.

Errg, I simply assumed he was strong because he just doesn't seem to die....ever....not even of old age.

What, did he stumble into a fountain of youth at some point?

In the Goblin camp, hovering him it said Level 3 : 6 HP.

LOL. I will take that as Volo having very high bluffing skills and magic.

I always assumed he was some kind of devil/demon, or a very incompetent celestial.

Elminster keeps Volo well-stocked with longevity potions in exchange for Volo staying FAR away from Elminster's haunts.

I think El also send Volo to visit the Zhents or Red Wizards for April Fools Day as well.

Elminster hinted that Volo is a Chosen of some god or other but doesn't know it in a recent novel by Greenbook.

Yea, allegedly Mystra invested some divine essence into him during the Spellplague.

Oh yeah, he is so far the only real haptic reference to the previous titles so far, although I only recall him appearing in BG2 as an illusion in Chapter 4.

Uh, Volo never witnessed the Spellplague, he got stuck in the imprisonment spell that held him for 100 years until the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist tabletop game before the Spellplague happened. And the Spellplague happened because Cyric and Shar KILLED Mystra, believing that only the Shadow Weave would survive.
