Uh, maybe more interesting playable NPCs?
BG2 in its first act had (not counting Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira, Yoshimo, all of which are OPTIONAL):
Vicona
Jan
Korgan
Nalia
Anomen
Aerie
Edwin
Keldorn
+a multittude of modded playable NPCs tied in with the story...

To choose from. Thats nearly 80% of all its NPC content within the first city. What a way to start an epic adventure.

bringing things closer to pnp, drastic overhaul of a lot of decisions made to date.

Then perhaps once things are smoothed out, maybe add some of those things back slowly but more carefully.

Let's see.
1. Toning down the environmental effects. Its way too much. I mean less barrels, Cantrips not starting fires everywhere. Npc's not acting like a MLB pitcher every fight.
2. Action bar changes/ui improvements
3. Jump and Shove and disengage. Making them more like 5e
4. Party movement. Im not a fan of the chain mechanic.
5. Mages and spells need work. No cleric spells for mages. A spell book or something. anything other than spells just thrown on an action bar with everything else.
7. Every click, action, or interaction turns into a laser light show. It just makes it feel so arcadey. Spells are beautiful and Im amazed with what Larian has done with them, but really the more mundane things or melee actions don't have to be so over-the-top.

There is a lot to like in the game. Some of these things not so much.

I am hoping for a drastic overhaul and redesign to put most of the mechanics closer to 5e. There will be some who won't like it, but if nothing else, the feedback from that would help Larian find a better middle ground.

However, I suspect that the actual balance patch we get won't be very drastic, just tweaking at the edges.
