Multi target spells like magic missile or scorching ray don't work right if you spread the targets out. I spread magic missile 2 to one target and 1 to another and only the first target takes damage. scorching ray either they all hit or they all miss, every time.
I have not run into this issue as a heavy Gale mm2 and scorching ray user.
However, Magic missile's trajectory does curve after the first cast. It could be very possible that you hit an object along the way, i've done it many times.
