The essence of Bhaal is the driving factor in the first two games. It allows you to become the slayer and gives you powers beyond just your class/race.

Does Bhaal and his essence play any role in BG3?

At his point in FG lore the dead 3 are back, and Bhaal, Myrkul and possibly Bane (it's less clear for him) are physically present in Faerun. Larain have teased their involvement though and
you get a camp follower that's either Jergal or an undead priest/servant of Jergal who has inexplicably (so far) taken an interest in you
. Also,
the absolute's unholy symbol looks an awful lot like Bane and Myrkul's symbols and seems to order her followers to commit a lot of seeming pointless murder

Spoilers for late EA:

There is a direct reference to Bhaal in the underdark. You can come across some fish people who worship some fey who is posing as Bhaal.

Other than that we will have to wait and see, but based on how many times he is mentioned throughout the ea I'm pretty sure he will have a part to play in the full game.

"74.85% of you stood with the Tieflings, and 25.15% of you sided with Minthara. Good outweighs evil, it seems."

There's a book in the Goblin camp as well.

The book directly references the first two games including the names of both Sarevok and Irenicus. It can be found in the pile of loot with the trader.

Thx for the clue I’ll try to find it!
