Anybody notice anything "funny" about the chess game mini-quest in the Citadel? The NPC talked about a chessboard with "65" squares. I'll have to double check, but it appeared to me that the "solution" to the chess problem left the black player with a non-checkmate move to take one of white's pawn. Am I simply delusional? Wait, wait don't answer that last part.

you are corrct.
the chess match could NOT end in checkmate with one move, as stated in the quest.
unless people have different screens, which i serioously doubt, whoever came up with the quest was either incorrect or it's someone's sense of humor - and i fail(ed) to see it.
i spent (probably like you) a good half hour looking at the board, fully realizing that there were simply NO moves to answer the quest - but sure i'd missed something. heck, i even went back to a previous save! silly me.
moving the white knight to K5 (e5) will STILL allow for the black king at black Q3 (d6) to capture the white pawn at black K3 (e6) without jeapordy.

as far as '65' squares. sounds like one of those fun iq tests where you have to include the 'square' of the board itself to get your 65 answer! but then you could start taking groups of 4 squares and calling them each squares.
too much work!!! ha!

hmmmm.
with his answer, maybe that's why he's STILL just a guard!!

Actually, I don't think the guard said 'checkmate'. He asked what move it would take to put all the kings in 'check'. The knight move would put all the kings in check.

This is the only ch. 1 quest I missed. How do you get it started?

Go into the officer's mass and simply talk to the guard - then click on the table, have a look at the board and guess the answer.

No, the guard said that one move would "put all black's kings in checkmate". In actuality, the suggested solution still allows black a move that avoids checkmate. Quest starts in the officers' mess (same location as the bottle of white rum). Talk to the guard and get conversation about playing chess. Then, after staring at the chess board for a while and evaluating the five "suggested" moves (none of which put all black's kings in checkmate), try each one in turn until the guard says "you've got lucky." Man, I thought I'd forgotten how to play.

When I saw that "65" my first thought was a manuscript in the classroom (Sgt Brainwash or something was there teaching). One of the students was doing math and one of his answers on the manuscript was something like "2+3=6". I just figured this chess player took the same class
