I can't dual wield with a versatile weapon. playing fighter. I can dual wield short swords, but if I equip a long sword it unequips my offhand weapon and uses the longsword 2 handed. same with battleaxe

Do you have the Dual Wielder feat? Otherwise only light weapons can be used for two weapon fighting.

I do not, that may be the issue. However I can still equip weapon I'm not proficient with just (I'm assuming) with a penalty to attack. shouldn't dual wield work the same? If I equip weapons I'm not proficient with (for DW purposes) just apply a penalty? Also, what I've seen of this so far only applies to versatile weapons automatically being used 2H.

Yes. I tried to use long sword and shield and the game don't allow it
