I'm sure the answer to this is on the forums somewhere, but I'm a bit dense with this newfangled interweb stuff.

When you get the prompt to roll a d20 through dialogue, is the roll result straight from the d20, or is it d20 plus your bonuses?

I ask because I occasionally see the following: I have a +2 bonus to, say, Investigation, and I attempt an Investigation check with a target number of, say, 11. If the roll result is 10, I get a failure message.

I have attempted checks both with skills in which I'm proficient, and straight attribute checks without proficiency, but I couldn't say whether the above scenario was limited to one or the other. In other words, I can't claim that one bonus or the other is being "dropped" somehow. All I can say with any certainty is that I have not yet seen a success where the displayed roll result is lower than the target number.

Any ideas? I am open to the possibility that I'm missing something basic, or that I'm batspit crazy.

The target number is the one calculated with all the bonuses and maluses you have on the roll, including advantages and disadvantages. So you only roll a raw d20 against the final threshold.
