One of the buttons in the lower-left while in dialog with NPC is TRADE. For example, Zevlor has a pretty cool item that I thought you had to loot or steal to get. But you can trade for it while talking to him. Just found this after 250+ hours of playing.

What's the difference between trade and barter?

I noticed it fairly early but assume its a leftover from the divinity engine.

Trading with anyone not a trader doesemt make sense. But is a good way to get things like potions I suppose.

Don't feel too bad, I think I only noticed between 50-60 hrs in that it showed up when talking to non-merchant characters as well.

Barter means you put things in the trade window to equal the amount asked for the thing you are trying to barter for. Trade you just pay straight up gold.
