I'm reading in every forum how easy it is to pull off thieving skills. I don't recall very early level thieving skills being very practical in the series. Are the skills really as trivial as people are making them sound?

Edit: Disregard this, please. I just learned that in modern D&D a level one fighter will have more training than most special forces members. Anyone with the acolyte background is considered High Priest material. We're not starting off as an inexperienced youth from Candlekeep here! I have some serious catching up to do.

Actually characters in 5e suck at skills compared to 3.5 or 4e characters. But they made pickpocketing super easy in this game for some reason.
