OK, I give up.
I read the hint book. I know to throw the levers highest to lowest.
The levers in the east room and upper right room look to be the same height. I start with east room, no gargoyles attack. I go to upper right, gargoyle attacked, therefore I assume that ain't the 2nd one. No matter what order I try (I can throw east, then lower right, then lower left, then west and not get attacked. Any lever I throw afterwards gets me attacked) fails.
I left that level (took stairs down, I assume that will "reset" the levers). I come back, throw upper right first, I get attacked.
At this point someone needs to tell me exactly which order to pull the levers.
Gods, I hope there aren't any more of these silly "pull lever/push button in the correct order or you die" puzzles.
Thanks in advance.

Just take the NE one and then simply move clockwise, until you reach the NW one as the last. Kiya

Kiya,
Sorry, didn't work. The NE one instantly triggers a gargoyle. I kept going anyway after killing it. Moving clockwise, when I get to the 4th one (upper left) I get a gargoyle and the golem which instantly destroys me. One of the other ones in between gives me the "red angry eyes" but nothing attacks.
I must have triggered some weird bug that now has me stuck. Wonderful.
Thanks anyway.

I'm not sure I took your post correctly => you said upper right and east are the same height. So, did you start with upper right or with East? If so - Raze says clearing the Dynamics helps (only the content, of course - not the folder itself. http://www.kiya1.de/beyond/act1maps/waterriddle0.jpgI thought a bit about your problem => did you by any chance touch a differnt lever first? Or => did you think you touched a lever, but you were too far away? Did you make sure, the lever was near enough (highlighted in grey). I can only assure you, this worked for me in all versions (from 1.0 until 1.43) Hm, as a try => I just removed my dynamic in Act 2 (for fun) and loaded my game, it functions. But there are fewer files than before. If you wish => send me your save game. I've got version 1.43 and would like to experiment with it. kiya1@t-online.de

If you have triggered the golum you are done with the levers.Defeat the gargoyle and the golum and the room is done and the stairs up are open.

When I finished the last lever (NW), the door to the treasure room does open. I didn't realize you have to run like heck to it and pray the golem doesn't get any licks in. I could have sworn someone said if you do tbe levers in the right order you don't get attacked and the door opens safely.
Now I'm where the Death Knights are, and despite sneaking, they still see me and kill my main character in like 2 or 3 hits.
Oh well, back to Sacred. Thanks for the help, and I might go back to BD later, but for now this game seems too contrived and arbitrary. i.e., not much fun.
Thanks again.

if you take a REALLY close look at the columns, you'll notice that there are 6 spines on either side of the column and the bulls head corresponds with one level of those spines. starting with the first switch, the bulls head will be on top, and (even though its kind of tough to make out for the ones facing away from you) the bulls head is one level lower on the successive columns until the 6th one which is at the bottom of the column.

Yes, if they are done in the sequence as on my screenie >= no enemy appears at least not in all my games. Now I'm where the Death Knights are, and despite sneaking, they still see me and kill my main character in like 2 or 3 hits. Thanks again. Hm, I killed the DK as a puny lvl 8er (on easy). I went into single mode and sneaked, until I saw them standing somewhere. I targeted them with my arrows (took poison this time - wanted them to die slowly and painfully ). They saw me => ran up to me - I went a few steps aside - they stopped, I fired again. Rinse and repeat. As long as you stay out of their red aura, they can't hurt you. And when they were about 50-60% down, I took my DK as melee. Another cheesy tactic is running circles => they run after your leading char and my DK (in aggressive mode) could hit them.

I just killed all the gargoyles and the Golem. I had no idea you COULD avoid the fights! Live and learn I guess
I certainly found that part pretty hard, IIRC, but by then my Mage's Elemental Missile spell was doing a fair chunk of damage.

I asked Barnie, German Tech crack => he said, this room is fix => if you use the levers in the correct sequence (not accidently missing one) => NO enemies come. Kiya

In Citadel IV you find a holy book which contains a riddle concerning I think these levers: In a row/like the waters flow/six is thrown/one is not shown/look around/on the ground/watch your back/or you`ll be hacked.
there are other worlds than this...
