My Background
So I'll start off by saying that I first heard of Larian about a year ago when a friend of mine got me to play Divinity Original Sin II with him and I fell in love with the game. I have been playing tabletop RPG games for 14 years now and I loved the feel that DOS2 gave me, someone had made a video game that felt like an actual DND game. Imagine my excitement when the very same studio was said to be making an actual DND video game. I've not played Larian's other projects, nor have I played the previous Baldur's Gate games. I started playing 3.5 DND in 2006 and moved to pathfinder a year later, I switched to 5e almost 3 years ago and I consider myself quite familiar with the rules in 5e.
My Game's Story
This isn't my only experience playing the game but this is the one that I tried to do every sidequest and actually get to the end of EA. I decided to make a wood elf, light cleric. I sided with the tieflings/druids, resolving it with Halsin returning to the druid circle to put a stop to the ritual. I pretty much destroyed all the goblins in the camp, only after the goblin shaman lady gave me a potion which I did drink, she turned hostile immediately after along with nearly all other goblins. Celebration night i got turned down for a romance by every member of my camp. I proceeded into the underdark with the moon puzzle in the goblin camp. Things were pretty straightforward from there. I decided to suppress the tadpole with the ring of mind shielding.
Things I liked
The feel of the game so far is amazing. Some changes from 5E rules to adapt to video game feel really good. I like the jump/disengage. I like the help action actually bringing people to 1HP rather than just stabilizing.
Things I didn't like
Again not necessarily confined to my one playthrough these are the things ive come across in no particular order. Drow should have proficiency in the perception skill. Lack of the Spiritual Weapon spell reduces the power of clerics dramatically. Trickery Clerics are already one of the weakest cleric subclasses, requiring concentration for Blessing of the Trickster is a substantial nerf to them, the decreased utility of their channel divinity feature invoke duplicity compared to the already weak 5e rules makes it nearly completely not worth using. Concentration usage seems to harsh, BG3 seems to have more small chip damage than 5E and seems to make concentration checks fail far too often. Bonus action should be switched to an action
Thing I Think Should Be Added
For multiplayer add a follow command for players to follow each other. The ability to set one character as your 'primary roleplayer' to avoid your -1 CHA character from entering important dialog just because the AI pathfinding decided to put them too close to an important conversation trigger. In multiplayer all players should be pulled into the conversation screen when initiated. A hide Helmet option. A visual representation of dice when rolling with advantage in conversations. Ritual spells, certain spells should be usable outside of combat without using spell slots. GUI for using spells at a higher level, similar to how hex brings up a menu for which ability you would like hex to affect, spells that have multiple levels with which they can be cast should pop up a menu asking what level to cast. The very prominent shadow / glowing eyes from blessing of the trickster need to be toned back.
Definitely not all my thoughts on the game. A lot got lost in my 41 hours of play lol. I love this game so far and want to see it come to fruition. I was moved by the video at the end of the playable content to give my feedback. I hope my thread helps!
