1. Gale asks for an artifact to consume
2. I say here have the Necromancy of Thay
3. Gale goes through the animation of consuming it and the short conversation afterwards.
4. The artifact is still in Shadowheart's inventory afterwards
5. A couple of rests later we return to 1. and I can give him the Necromancy of Thay again.

I'm having the same problem on one of my characters. And when I give him the book it says his quest has been updated, but I can't find it in the quest list. And the book reappears in my inventory.

I had no problem giving him the book on another character.

I had a similar problem, but the artifacts should not disappear completely, but lose their magical properties.
