I brought 1 character and cleared the field from petrified elves, I threw all sorts of trash at them and they were wounded for 1,2 or 3 life units, but I finished it. Then I brought the whole squad and stood in the center of the site for the Beholder to come. Just scored it 2, without elves it is easy.

This is by far the toughest fight in the game. The Spectator is able to exclude two party members from the fight and frees the Drow every turn.
Interestingly, from patch 4, the fight is broken before Drows attack randomly by team or Spectator. Currently, they are attacking only the team.
It is definitely more difficult and you need to burst the boss to win the fight.
I hope they'll fix it in the next patch.

Something they might fix, but you can push the beholder off the ledge (your player with their back to the money area) and it seems to get stuck there and it uses it's rays but never comes back up.
