I just finished Act 1, so things may change and new challenges arise--I hope--but with the later patches, and restocking stores, healing and mana potions seem practically unlimited.

Is is actually possible to lose a battle with healing and mana potions so plentiful?

If your opponent is strong enough, or you are weak enough, then a 1 hit kill will end the fight. Anything less than that, and enough potions will let you survive just about any encounter.

Yes. Sometimes the damage mounts very fast indeed, and while you might not run out of potions, one moment's inattention - or just a bit of bad luck - will still see you run out of hit points...

Boy is that ever the truth. If I don't keep one eye on my characters' health bar(s), it's sayonara DK, et al.

Both of my characters are Wizards who use the alchemy feature. I like not having to rely on the merchants for potions. (Just one more feature that makes BD flexible!)

Well, after my over confident statement, I did run into a problem.

In the beginning of Act II I ran into some critters called "Ancient Stone Biters". There were two of them. I eliminated one with ease, and got the other down to about a tenth of his (her?) hitpoints--and suddenly, the reamining one gets two critical hits in a row. He/she get two criticial hits in a row and kills my character on three reloads!

Finally defeat the bugger by avoiding being hit at all toward the end (run around and fight at a distance). So, yeah, one can lose in spite of a boatload of healing and mana potions--but it seems to me a bit of a cheat--same monster, even on reload, gets incredibly lucky a couple of times in a row.

Frankly, I would be more pleased with fewer cases of phenomenol luck, and with fewer healing and mana potions.

I thought the game had really cool combat intially. But the new patches seem to me to make it too easy, unless you run into something like this--phenomenal and consistent luck on the part of enemies.

The Ancient Stonebiter also puts up a fire shield around itself that does horrendous damage. That's what kept killing me when I fought it...

My chars. are level 19, I've done a ton of quests and 2 of the 3 battlefield dungeons in act 2, and the Ancient Stone Biter, that someone mentioned before, STILL kills me every time I fight it.

In huge melee fights, when all of a suggen 15 enemies show up and surround you, it can be virtually impossible to hit the potions fast enough to stay alive. And it's usually that one stupid frog or tibar or cat or whatever, that you acidentally killed one once and now they're all enemies, that pushes you over the edge.

Your level is not hat relevant. The major thing that is important when fighting the ancient stone biter is your fire resistance. That should be as high as possible.
Also the agility of the stonebite is very high, which makes it hard to hit, but it does have a low resistance against piercing and poison damage.

When you reduce an ancient stonebiter to about 1/4 of the original HP it goes in some sort of beserk mode.
It gets a increased damage, increased hit chance, increased armor, increased evades and a damage shield (not sure about this one).
It last about 15 to 20 seconds, after that it goes in some sort of fatigued state in which it is a wimp to kill.
So if you survive the beserk state (I suggest running around like mad) it should be an easy target.

Correct - I lured it to the drunken soldiers and watched them - they knew when to run away. Did the same. Survived.

You were momentarily bitten by 'gamer's ego', suffering delusions of grandeur and invincibility. I know your frustration all too well. So, good motto to live by: save often!

Walking into the wrong kind of trap is usually a killer, trailbombs, swarm traps and that funny exploding ground trap are rather dangerous. Also being nabbed by a bunch of Earth Elementals using earthquake is a good way of ending your life quickly.

Interesting--I wondered what was going on there. However, the first one I killed did nothing so spectacular--only the second one, which seems odd.

Trail bombs give you a little warning, and are easy to outrun (at least if you are already moving). Also, they are not too particular about targets. I laughed the first time one veered off and took out a frog.
