I'm wondering if Laezel (and Us for that matter) should be non-controllable while on the nautiloid. Here's a few reasons:

1) Seems unreasonable that she'd listen to any "shouted" commands from you. She knows what's best, right?
2) Control over her lets you take everything from her. A couple of playthroughs now I've traded my worthless armor for her Githyanki half-plate. Really good upgrade for my Githyanki wizard. eek
Laezel seems the type to chop off your head for merely suggesting a trade. frown
3) Us to a lesser extent doesn't feel right that we control it. It should be controlled by the mind flayer, not you.

Those are things I happily put into "video game conventions". I mean, we also pick up plenty of things and we have no backpack ... where does it all go ?

Then why control any companion later in game. I don't see the reason they would obey my orders. ;-)

Logically that all makes sense . . . the the main point of the nautiloid section is as a tutorial. Letting you control the characters lets you learn how the combat systems work. And you are going to be controlling your companions for the rest of the game anyway.

I do think Laezel's armor should be locked however! No way she is letting you touch that!! That said, they have made the Githyanki armor ugly enough that I don't want any of my characters wearing it anyway smile

From a gameplay perspective, it's useful to have controllable NPC's during the Nautiloid-tutorial so the game can explain how party mechanics work.
That said, it wouldn't be unreasonable for Lae'zel's equipment (armor at least) to be locked at least during the tutorial.

Obviously we need a pokemon-like mechanic, where each companion has a chance of not listening to your orders unless you have high enough gym badges approval.

d20 check anytime you want to issue a command to a companion . . . the perfect solution! smile

Knowing dice rolls in this game I would probably end up fighting with Laezel or Astarion at first camp night.
