Instead of actually using them where they are found I decided to drag them along just incase I couldn't translate texts later on.
Code
problem is that they either don't work:

        in another act
or after being carried in inventory
or after to another playfield in the same act.

Sjeez having to use code tags to keep indentation.

Well that kind of sucks. I take it the text description still shows up, but you do not get the 'level up' style message? If you drag them onto the ground will they work there, or does moving them cause them to loose whatever attribute triggers the language learning?

No level up message. No change of red runes to black readable text. going to see what caused it. Hrm I just wanted to take the books with me as an insurance in case you actually need to be able to read ingame instead of me reading what it says in the text.

You must have read at least one of the books if some of the runes are in red text; before that they are all black. Do you have all 3 books?

Not in this run of the game (yet). When trying to drag the beginner book to my inventory I opened it so I got the beginner knowledge.
That is also how I found out that the intermediate book doesn't work anymore, was collecting the texts in act 3 and I accidentally hit the book instead of the next text I was planning to read.

Ok it is the switching of acts that makes the book stop with the you learned message.
Also the strange gems get their name changed to do not use.

It's not only that => take the tasty mushroom e.g. => if you change acts, you can't eat it and get the luck bonus +3.

Ok just tested with book 3.
Just reading that will allow you to read all stuff in game. But I won't bother it'll allow me to see which books on Rivellon are in Raanaar ;P

So you knew what was in them when picking them up without reading them? Reading them when found would've given you the translation skills... Not a real answer to the problem, but I find it pretty strange you're dragging books into your inventory without reading them <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Now for the answer: some story-related objects will indeed "lose their powers" when taken into another act. Most of these objects, however, have "powers" you wouldn't need in another act (e.g. what are you gonna do with a coal barrel from act 1).. Except, yep, for Raanaar books that you've never read...

Not the first run through the game.
I've been trying all sorts of wierd things.
Like getting to act 4 without uncursing the doll <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hm, in earlier versions you could uncurse Anlokam and her doll was still with you - dunno, if 1.32 EV allowed that.

Oh oh, i did it but not intentionally too.
I have no idea if it was uncursed, but i still had it in act 4 (1.44)
