After saving the Zhents in the cave and getting the password I never get to use it. When I reach the entrance the fireball guys requires a DEX check or fight and on a success the password is never a dialogue option.
Once in the hideout there is a dialogue where they say something along the lines of "You must be the friend they talked about" and no mention of the password. Just seems weird that I never get to use it.

The password is for the guy guarding the entrance into the Zhent hideout....if you successfully pass the check. If not, he explodes everything.
Strat here would be to sneak in, remove as many explosive barrels as you can then interact with the Zhent guy guarding the entrance to Zhent hideout.

This is a bug of the last patch. Unfortunately, he broke several quests, including this one.

@bullse As I wrote. Even on a successful DEX check the alternative to use the password never shows up
